The Capture of Christ. Oil on canvas. Signed in Cyrillic and dated lower right (19)89. Verso signed, titled and dated in Cyrillic. 120 x 130 cm. This painting is illustrated on the front page of a catalogue published by the 'Modern Art Gallery Leningrad'. After the Second World War in 1945 he moved with his family to Leningrad, where he graduated from the Leningrad Art School. From the early 1960's he participated in the nonconformist movement. In 1964 his works were shown with those of four other unofficial artists in an exhibition at the Hermitage Museum that was closed down by the KGB. In 1975 Ovchinnikov took part in the first approved exhibition of unofficial artists. His works are represented in the Russian Museum (Leningrad) and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
