Russia, 1934. "The Epic of Igor". Written and illustrated by Ivan Gollikov. The Epic describes the failed campaign against the Polowzk of the Russian duke Igor Swjatoslawitsch of Nowgorod-Sewersk in 1185. The epic laments the Russian disunity and the lack of a central monarch. The epic has 218 verses. The only conserved original handwriting of this epic was burned while the invasion of Napoleon in 1812 in Moscow. The epic became popular in Eastern Europe in the 19th century. The opera "Duke Igor" by Alexander Borodin is based upon the Igor epic.
