Title: The Journal of a Forty-Niner
Author: Brooks, E[rnest] W[illiam]
Description: [4], 67, [1] pp. Frontispiece portrait from photo. 9x6¼, full blue oasis morocco polished plain, spine lettered in gilt, two raised bands, gilt ruling over morocco turn-ins, top edge gilt; bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. 1 of 4 copies bound in oasis morocco, from a total of only 50, printed by the Curwen Press. First Edition.Brooks, a devout and temperate man, left Elyria, Ohio, and traveled with a partner to the Sacramento Valley in 1849 via St. Joe, where they joined a larger party of Buckeyes. The trip consumed five months, and took the company by way of South Pass, Salt Lake City, Goose Lake and the Pitt River. The text consists of Brooks' verbatim journal, recounting a trip probably more tedious than arduous; the most excitement they seem to have encountered was in the form of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, sunstroke, and some mercenary Mormon ferrymen. Kurutz 80; Mintz 53.
