Chinese solid gilt-bronze figure of Buddha Shakyamuni, Late Northern Wei dynasty, 6th century, based on the so-called Udayana prototype with thick monastic robes rendered in U-shaped folds rhythmically falling to the front and stopping short of the under-robes gathered at his ankles, his hands depicted in the characteristic abhaya and varada mudras, his benevolent visage with crisply defined features framed by a wavy coiffure extending over a low ushinisha, (corrosion, patches of cuprite and malachite), 11''h; Provenance: Mrs. Christian R.
