Description
Burning of Negro Smith  Greenville, TX, July 28, 1908. Ted Smith, an 18 year old African American, was charged with criminal assault on Miss Viola Delancey. Captured by officers he was being taken to Greenville jail when he was overpowered by a mob of citizens, who took him and prepared to lynch him. After discussion, the mob decided to burn him at the stake. Placing him on a pile of wood in the public square, kerosene oil was poured on and a match applied. Smith slowly burned to death while 1,000 persons looked on. This is a printed photo of this atrocity by J.Q. Adams, Greenville, TX. Unused, extremely scarce.  1
