HEXAGONAL AND SPIRAL-TWIST STEM NEAR PAIR OF CANDLESTICKS, canary, each featuring a thick-lipped hexagonal socket with twisted extension, a tightly twisted hollow stem, and a hexagonal foot factory polished underneath, two-piece construction without wafer. Probably New England. 1850-1875. 7 1/2" and 7 5/8" h, 4 1/8" dia base overall.
Provenance: Property of a Virginia gentleman. Green Valley Auctions, Inc., 5/11/02, lot #506. Ex-collection: Harold & Marcia Grunewald.
Note: We have sold several examples of these scarce candlesticks, all of which have been slightly different. This is due to the fact that the stem twists were manipulated by the gaffer while the glass was still hot. This was a most unusual manufacturing technique which undoubtedly resulted in many imperfect and unsatisfactory examples being produced.
