HARMON PERCY MARBLE (American)

Harmon Percy Marble (American, 1870 - 1945)

Group of 5 Photographs.

* Beehive Oven. Gelatin silver print. c1911 - 1926. 6 1/2 x 4 5/8 in. (165 x 117 mm). Sheet Size: 6 15/16 x 4 15/16 in. (176 x 125 mm). Outdoor horno or beehive oven used for baking bread at all Pueblo Indian villages. A strong wood-burning fire is built inside to heat the oven. Then the ashes are removed, the bread is placed inside, and the opening is covered with a board or other covering. The bread bakes, using the residual heat only. This style of adobe brick oven was probably introduced by the Spanish. * Cleaning Deer, Taos 1912. Gelatin silver print. c1912. Titled in pencil on verso. 6 1/2 x 4 9/16 in. (165 x 116 mm). Typed notation on verso: "Unidentified group of Indians gathered around makeshift corral or roped enclosure holding horses. Adobe buildings in background, as well as clothing and hairstyles of people (both difficult to see clearly) suggest these are Pueblo Indians." * Navajo Indian Reservation. A number of fully saddled horses can be seen to the left and behind the trees. * Wakas Kachinas in Moencopi, No. 2. Gelatin silver print. c1911 - 1926. 4 5/8 x 6 9/16 in. (117 x 167 mm). Sheet Size: 4 15/16 x 6 15/16 in. (125 x 176 mm). Typed notation on verso: "Group of Wakas (Cow) Kachinas and others in Hopi village of Moencopi. This scene shows the Wakas Kachinas either entering the village or resting. At the far right is the kachina chief. The second figure from the right is a Koyemsi (Mudhead) Kachina in street clothes and carrying a large drum, which he will play while the kachinas dance. The third figure from the right is an unidentified kachina, standing in front of a Wakas Kachina. Next in line is a Wakas Mana (Cow Kachina Girl), wearing a white shawl with red band along the bottom. The remaining figures all appear to be Wakas Kachinas." [5].
