1855 Albemarle County Virginia Tax Bill on 14 Slaves & Property

1855, Albemarle County (Virginia) Tax Bill, Includes Tax on 14 Slaves and Clocks, Choice Very Fine.
This original, preprinted 4" x 8" form directs the Sheriff of Albemarle County to collect the annual tax on land, slaves, horses, clocks and other categories, plus a "C. & P. Levy" on White adults and Blacks. The name of the person or firm being taxed is handwritten at the top, the amounts have been filled in by hand, and the document is signed at the bottom. In this case, Joseph W. Campbell has been taxed on 709 acres of land, "1 White male," 14 slaves, a watch, a clock and a piano. This tax bill is in very nice condition, the paper being fairly bright with only 2 folds, with a damp stain in the right margin, and a bit of age toning along one fold. An interesting look at life in pre-Civil War Virginia for Blacks and Whites.
