1840 Campaign Circular for Martin Van Buren's Re-Election

1840 Presidential Campaign, Scarce Circular Promoting Martin Van Buren's Re-Election, New York, Choice Very Fine.
Printed Circular, one-page, folded, 7.75" x 6.4", dated September 24, 1840, with New York red postal cancellation of October 2. Mailed as a folded letter to the Postmaster of Jay, NY, from the Democratic Corresponding Committee of NYC, signed in print by 'JOHN H. MUMFORD, Chairman," urging support for President Martin Van Buren's re-election in his run against Whig candidate William Henry Harrison, who defeated Van Buren but died one month after taking office. In part:
"The Democratic Corresponding Committee of this City have sent, and are about sending to your address, papers, and documents for the perusal of yourself and neighbors, calculated, as they suppose, to impress you with the importance of putting in action your best energies and exertions to secure the permanency of our Democratic Institutions. It is confidently believed that this can be done in no way so effectually as by the re-election of Martin Van Buren. His merits as a Statesman and Patriot, the principles which he represents... The ignorance we are under, of any settled public policy of any kind, on the part of General Harrison, the opposing Candidate, is sufficient reason for witholding [sic] from him our support for the high office he aspires to, and yet, the fact, that he is sustained in his pretensions, by the united voice and the princely fortunes of the leading Federalists of the nation, to say nothing of the pecuniary aid of the subjects of foreign powers, is abundant evidence of the danger to which the institutions of the country would be exposed by his election... your active and best exertions in sustaining the great principles of public liberty, as proclaimed by Jefferson, and acted upon by Madison, Jackson and Van Buren..." Minor ink staining, small tear and absence from wax seal--affecting three words in the last two paragraphs, normal folds, and slight wear to outside mailing leaf. Terrific content!
