MAX ROSENTHAL.
c. 1900, Color Lithograph of Alexander Hamilton in Uniform, Die-Proof, Signed by the Artist, "Max Rosenthal", Choice Extremely Fine. This wonderful color portrait of Alexander Hamilton is printed on light tan paper, measuring 12.75" x 8.75". The portrait features Hamilton's right profile, chest-up, and is signed in pencil by Max Rosenthal, in the lower right border of the plate, which measures 8" x 5", no place or date.
Max Rosenthal (1833-1918) was a prominent Philadelphia lithographer. In 1884, he turned his attention to etching, and in connection with his son, Albert Rosenthal, issued a series of portraits of men prominent in American history. In 1890 he took up the work of engraving in mezzotint, and as he was already a reputable painter of portraits and historical subjects, his artistic training led him to produce mezzotint portraits of merit.
