1755-1756 Colonial Bounty Pay Orders for Foxes Killed, Lot of 3, Sandwich, MA, Fine.
This lot features three fine examples of colonial bounties paid to citizens who killed foxes, which were probably making off with chickens or other livestock.
1. November 20, 1755, Bounty Pay Order, addressed to Silas Bourn, Town Treasurer, from Selectmen Samuel Tupper and Thomas Smith. This document on fine-laid paper orders payment of four shillings to Matthias Ellis for two fox heads whose ears were cut off "according to the town act." Measuring 2.25" x 8", the document is toned, has a few small holes and uneven lower margin, but very crisp writing.
2. March 16, 1756, for "Foxes Killed... and Their Ears Cut Off," addressed to Silas Brown, "Town Treasurer Or his Succesor". This pay order grants "John Freeman" twelve shillings "which Is for Six foxes killed within our Town and Brought to One of the Select Men... and Their Ears Cut Off." Document is signed by Selectmen Sam.ll Tupper and Thos. Smith, has light toning, heavier on the left side, and measures 3.25" x 7.5".
3. February 23, 1756, this payment order measures 3.5" x 3.75", and orders Silas Brown to pay to Ichabod Perry fourteen shillings for seven foxes killed within the town. Signed by Selectmen John Freeman, Tupper, and Smith. A bounty of Two Shillings per Fox was paid.
