"Blood & Fire" Flag of The Salvation Army

Early Salvation Army "Blood & Fire" Flag, probably made for a Memorial Service, Choice Very Fine.
This unusual 12" x 18" flag was used by the Salvation Army, probably in the late 1800s or early 1900s. The flag was made by sewing together 6 separate pieces of burlap cloth, plus another to form the hoist. The border pieces are black, the center rectangle is dark red, the 8-pointed star yellow, and the hoist blue. According to the Salvation Army, the border of the flag should be blue, which suggests this flag may have been made for a memorial service. Aside from some fraying in the lower right corner and a hole near the bottom of the hoist, this flag is in great shape. This is the first we have seen of this type of flag.

The Salvation Army is a Christian religious group, formed in the 1870s, which operates worldwide. Best known today for its shelters, thrift stores, and Christmas donation kettles, the Salvation Army operates missions all over the world. The first Salvation Army flag was created in 1878. Until 1882 the central shape was an image of the sun, but when the Salvation Army began work in India, it was changed to a star in deference to the Parsees, an Indian religious group, who regarded the sun as sacred. The flag consists of a blue border surrounding a red background, in the centre of which is a yellow star. The Salvation Army's motto "Blood & Fire" is also inscribed on the flag, sometimes with the name of the corps, centre or section to which the flag belongs. The blue border represents the holiness of God and the holiness of the life Christians are called to live. The red background is a reminder of Jesus' blood shed on the cross. The yellow star symbolises the power of God's Holy Spirit.
