Famous Signers on Colonial Currency
Exceptional March 1, 1769 Counterfeit Note Signed by a Fake "John Nixon" The Very First Person To Publicly Read The Declaration of Independence!
(JOHN NIXON), Contemporary Counterfeit Signed Note, including the Very First Person to Publicly Read the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776.
Pennsylvania. March 1, 1769. One Pound Ten Shillings. Plate C. Contemporary Counterfeit. Falsely Signed by "J.(ohn) Nixon." Choice Crisp Extremely Fine. Not only is this note exceedingly rare as a Contemporary Counterfeit of the issue, it is in remarkable high quality. It also bears the large, false signature of John Nixon, who was the very first person to publicly read the new "Declaration of Independence" in Philadelphia! That signature is an extraordinarily deep bold brown and as vivid as the day it was written. This note remains very crisp and clean with clear text and designs. It compares favorably, if not slightly finer than the Newman plate note of this same denomination for the issue in THE EARLY PAPER MONEY OF AMERICA. An old round collector ID tag (likely that of T. James Clarke), can be easily removed from the reverse. This is the finest example of this denomination and the only specimen we have offered. EX: B&M, Chris Schenkel Collection Auction, November 1990, Lot 5275.
