Description
New York Currency1790 "Corporation of the City of New York" One Penny
New York. February 20, 1790. Corporation of the City of New York. One Pence. Choice Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated.
This rare small change private issue note has the printed signature "D.(aniel) Phoenix" as City Treasurer. This note has full margins, crisp edges and sharp corner tips. The black text is sharply printed on the face side, the reverse printed slightly off-register. This note retains a quality overall appearance with just a couple of near faint creases. One of the finer surviving examples of this scarce issue to come to market.
According to Eric Newman, New York approved a total of £9,660 in notes to satisfy "the want of small change" (although not all of the notes are know to have been issued and only about ten percent were part of this issue) This entire issue was recalled to the treasury by June 1, 1799 for redemption and to be burnt.
