1803, Book Titled, "Law of Bills of Exchange, Promissory Notes, Cash Notes and Bank Notes," by Joseph Chitty, Philadelphia, Very Fine.
This contemporary leather hardcover work, measuring 8.25" x 5.25," and containing 290 pages, reprinted in 1803 for P. Byrne in Philadelphia, is the first American edition of Chitty's book, originally published in London in 1799. An important and historic major early Treatise by Joseph Chitty regarding the laws relating to Bills of Exchange, Promissory Notes, Cash Notes, Bank Notes and Tax Stamps in the English financial system, considered a standard work, went through 12 American editions by 1860. References: Marvin 192; HLC I:378-379; Cohen 2522. Sir Joseph Chitty (1775-1844) was an English lawyer and legal writer, from a family of lawyers. This work is complete, well bound, evenly toned, with some foxing, mainly on the end papers. The cover is worn along the edges, with a 2" crack at the top of the spine. The book is clean inside, the only markings found are the name of a previous owner, Ziba Pyle, written at the top of the title page. An important early work on Financial History.
