Important Collection of Ten Colonial Lottery Tickets

Collection of Ten Different, Classic and Choice Quality, Early American Colonial Period Lottery Tickets.
1. Massachusetts. 1744. "Massachusetts Government Lottery" Ticket. Extremely Fine. Boldly printed in rich black ink and signed by "S. Watts" and measures 1.2" x 3.25" with full margins. A very nice example of this rare lottery, renowned as the very first held in America. This ticket appears to also be a winner, as the name "Jane" is boldly written in brown on the blank reverse side.

2. Colony of Rhode Island. c. 1770. "Gloucester Road Lottery" Ticket. Class "Second." Choice About Extremely Fine. Bold in print, signed "Wm Ross". plate D. Very Rare. A definite prize winner as noted on the blank verso.

3. November 18, 1776. "United States Lottery" Ticket. Class the First. Extremely Fine. Signed by J. Searle. Docketed on the reverse showing that this was a winning ticket held by Dr. John Stuart, who was given a $20 prize and "...a Ticket in the Second Class in lieu of this."

4. Connecticut. 1780. "New-Haven Lottery" Ticket. Second Class. "...for building a Bridge over East River." Choice Crisp About Uncirculated. A Winner and noted on the blank back $10 was paid on June 20, 1781. Wonderful, bold black printed text with vivid reddish-orange ink signature and serial number.

5. District of Columbia. c. 1784. "Land and Cash Lottery" Ticket. Choice About Uncirculated. Bright and fresh, signed boldly by John Tho. Boucher.

6. City of Washington. c. 1790. "Washington City Canal Lottery" Ticket. Choice Uncirculated. Signed by "Daniel Carroll of Duddington," and is tipped to small card.

7. (Maryland) c. 1790. "Second Presbyterian Church Lottery" Ticket. City of Baltimore. Choice Crisp Uncirculated. Very large margins enhance this well centered example. Boldly printed with vivid brown signature on extremely fresh, bright paper.

8. Massachusetts. March 2, 1790. "Massachusetts Monthly State Lottery" Ticket. Class Seventh. Gem Crisp Uncirculated. A bright, fresh beautiful example signed by S. Cooper with a notation on the blank verso indicating this ticket was a winner.

9. Massachusetts. March 2, 1790. "Massachusetts State Lottery" Ticket. Class Second. Hole Cancel. Choice Crisp About Uncirculated. Boldly printed, fresh and very attractive. Signed by Jn. Kneeland and canceled with the payment notation of "4 Dollars."

10. (Rhode-Island) Providence. November 1797. "Episcopal Church Lottery" Ticket. Crisp About Uncirculated. A scarce lottery in lovely quality. Bold red serial number with lighter signature of H. Larned at lower right. Very well printed with nice eye appeal.
