This choice item is an untrimmed pamphlet, published by "The Cheap Repository for Moral and Religious Tracts," which recounts the wickedness and evil which awaits God-fearing Englishmen who would be enticed by Lottery schemes of the day. In this sad tale, a hardworking servant named John Brown falls into debt, criminality and ruin after he squanders his money on the Lottery. He loses his wife, his child, and is sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered for his role in a robbery-murder. The morality tale is printed in an untrimmed, 7.5" x 5" pamphlet, with a wonderful woodcut on the cover depicting men in period dress awaiting the results of a lottery drawing. The paper exhibits only minor age toning and slight edge wear. The price for this marvelous tract was only one penny, and its contents were certain to turn men away from the "advantages of adventuring" in lottery schemes. Sold by "J. Marshall", who was the "printer to the Cheap Repository for Moral and Religious Tracts", located in London. A terrific period pamphlet!
