Remarkable 1901 William McKinley Inaugural Die Reverse 1901 Presidential Inaugural Die, Second Term, William McKinley & Theodore Roosevelt, Reverse Die Hub, Joseph K. Davison's Sons-Medalist, Choice Near Mint. (Used for striking WMcK 1901-3. Marqusee 29. 44mm.) The top of the engraved die measures 44mm and it stands 48mm tall. The outer legend reads "WILLIAM McKINLEY PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES - THEODORE ROOSEVELT VICE PRESIDENT" surrounding the engraved United States Capital Building, which has the date "MAR. 4. 1901" engraved below the steps. The steel die is in excellent condition having no marks and slight signs of wear. It appears that this die remains in its original "as made" quality and has not been cancelled or defaced in any way. The obverse of this medal (not included) shows a large central bust of William McKinley, with the surrounding legend reading "SECOND INAUGURATION OF WILLIAM McKINLEY" within an ornate beaded device. A excessively rare die that will be a truly spectacular highlight for any major Presidential or political collection, which may well exceed our estimate range. Only 3,000 of these medals were struck by the Jos. K. Davison Co. of Philadelphia for distribution to members of the Inaugural Committee. This was the first time that a medal was issued separately from the identifying committee badge. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
