1907 Foundry-cast Bronze relief portrait of a bearded "LYOV TOLSTOI", Signed "JF" in cast initials by John Flanagan, Produced by the Medallic Art Company for its showroom, [NY], mounted on board. The aged-brown patina bronze relief portrait measures 6.75" x 5", and is mounted on a mahogany wood plaque, 12.25" x 8.5". The wood plaque has a 3" split at the top, but the portrait is unaffected. John Flanagan produced the front and back of the George Washington Quarter in 1932, as well as over 17 different medals during his career. Similar to Lot 447, Presidential Coin & Antique Co. John Flanagan (1865–1952) was an American sculptor who designed the Washington Quarter, which was issued in 1932. Flanagan's initials can be found at the base of Washington's neck. Flanagan designed both sides of the quarter. From 1885 to 1890, Flanagan was a studio assistant to Augustus St. Gaudens and worked on several large projects.
There were two Russian novelists named Leo Tolstoi, father and son. Lev Nikolaeivich Tolstoi (1828-1910) was the father, and Lev Lyovich Tolstoi (1869-?) was the son.
