Important "Bank of the United States" Document Signed by Both Elias Boudinot and William Bradford
ELIAS BOUDINOT, 1783, as President of the Continental Congress, Signed the Treaty of Paris & WILLIAM BRADFORD, George Washington's Attorney General.
June 9, 1792 dated Manuscript Document, 2 pages, written on one double-sided sheet, Bank of the United States Appointment, Signed by Elias Boudinot and by William Bradford, Choice Very Fine.
This Manuscript Document, Appoints John Kean as Cashier of the Bank of the United States. The document is Signed by both "Elias Boudinot" and "Wm(illiam) Bradford" together and on the opposite side, measuring 8.5" by 6.75" signed again by "Wm(illiam) Bradford," with the original paper covered wax seals being fully intact on both sides. The front side has an official Appointment, and reads:
"Know all men by the Presents that I, Elias Boudinot of Elizabeth Town New Jersey do constitute & appoint John Kean Esq. Cashier of the Bank of the United States my true & lawful attorney for me & in my Name to receive all such Interest money, as may be due to me on the first day of July next, on the Stock I am possessed of in the Funds of the United States, and to convey carry the sd.(said) monies so received to my Credit in the Books of the U.S. Bank. - And I do hereby promise to confirm whatever my sd. Attorney shall lawfully do in the Premesis and to acknowledge all & every the receipt or the receipts he shall give in Discharge thereof in as Witness my Hand & Seal this Twenty Ninth Day of June Anno Domini One Thousand Seven Hundred & Ninety Two. - Elias Boudinot."
This document is signed very boldly by Boudinot in his distinctive style and is clean, very well written and clear to read. The second document on the verso has the witnessing in the presence of, and is boldly Signed, "Wm(illiam) Bradford," on June 13, 1792 along side of his Seal. Bradford's signature is quite rare. Also included with this lot is an early engraving of William Bradford, by Edwin. A historical double-document that crosses into the field of early American banking and financial history. (2 items).
Elias Boudinot was born in Philadelphia in 1740, and served as a delegate from New Jersey to the Continental Congress from 1777 to 1778, and again from 1781 to 1784. In 1783, as president of the Continental Congress, he signed the Treaty of Paris, and was for a time President of the United States in Congress Assembled. After the Constitution was ratified, he served as a U.S. Representative from 1789 to 1795, then was appointed Director of the United States Mint.
William Bradford was an influential Colonial American publisher and staunchly opposed the hated British Stamp Act. He became George Washington's Attorney General as well.
