Original sepia-toned Photograph Carte-de-Visite, Signed "R.W. Emerson" on its reverse, no date, 4" x 2.4" card, with backstamp by J.W. Black of Boston, with a 2¢ U.S. Revenue stamp affixed on the back as well, Choice Very Fine. Emerson's bold huge signature measures over 2.5" long. The current Sanders autograph reference price guide lists a signed image value of $2,530. The seated, 3/4 pose of Emerson is quite nice for this extremely scarce fully Signed CDV in lovely quality by Emerson--the first we've offered!
Emerson (1803-1882) was a Unitarian minister who, from 1829 onwards, began to give lectures in the U.S. and abroad, drawn from the "Journals" which he had been keeping for years. His two volumes of "Essays" (1841, 1844) assured his international reputation. In 1845, he gave a series of talks on "Representative Men". His home in Concord became the center of the Transcendentalist movement. Emerson was closely associated with Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, Hawthorne, and Bronson Alcott.
