1880-1881, James A. Garfield and Chester A. Arthur Campaign and Inauguration Mementoes, Lot of 12, Very Fine-Extremely Fine.This is an exceptional lot of James A. Garfield memorabilia, particularly from his 1880 campaign and 1881 inauguration. The lot includes:
1. c. 1880 James A. Garfield Albumen Photograph on a Silk Square, Very Choice Extremely Fine. Nearly 2" square, printed "BEST MAN BY A LARGE MAJORITY" in black ink on a silver-colored silk. Attached at center is an albumen photograph of Garfield. An extremely rare style and a very impressive campaign piece.
2-4. 1880 Presidential Election Items, Extremely Fine. Includes CDV images of Chester A. Arthur and James A. Garfield, plus a National Republican Ticket from Vermont. All three items are in excellent condition, the ticket with a small tear on the left side. All have blank backs.
5. March 4, 1881, GARFIELD-ARTHUR INAUGURATION BALL PROGRAM, Printed by Kendall Bank Note Co., NY, Very Fine. 4.5" x 6", 14 pages, color lithographed. Featuring a nice dual-portrait cover, and patriotic images throughout. The music director is none other than John Philip Sousa! Lightly toned pages, in wonderful condition, slight separation along spine. A choice example.
6-7. 1881 Garfield-Arthur Inauguration Silk Ribbons, from the "Public Comfort" and "Reception" Committees, 7.5" x 2.4" each, one is faded purple and the other is black, both with gold printed heraldic eagle and lettering, Very Fine.
8. Printed Engraving for Garfield and Arthur's Inauguration Reception Promenade Concert, March 4, 1881, 6" x 9.75", by Homer Lee Bank Note Co., NY, Choice Extremely Fine. With beautiful images of Washington, Garfield, and Arthur.
9-11. Another Printed Engraving for Garfield and Arthur's Inauguration Reception Promenade Concert, March 4, 1881, with admission ticket and original embossed transmittal envelope, Very Fine. Addressed to General Christopher C. Augur, of San Antonio, Texas.
12. Gilt-stamped, cloth-bound volume, titled: "Memorial Address: Life and Character of James A. Garfield...by James G. Blaine, February 27, 1882," Washington, D.C., 11.75" x 8", Very Fine.
