"Andrew Johnson" Ornate Military Commission Signed Just Twelve Days After Abraham Lincoln's Death!

ANDREW JOHNSON, President of the United States, Vice-President under Abraham Lincoln.
This is a high quality, Partially Printed Document Signed "Andrew Johnson" as President of the United States, and "E. M. Stanton" as Secretary of War, 19.75" x 15.75", with blue embossed seal, Choice Extremely Fine. President Johnson's signature is 3" in length and Stanton's is 2" long. This ornate document is a Military Commission for John Craig, appointed Military Storekeeper in the Quartermasters Department of the United States Army. This appointment is dated January 31, 1865, but was not signed until April 27th, 1865 -- just 12 days after the death of President Lincoln. This document should have been signed by Lincoln, and was apparently waiting to be signed when the president was assassinated. Ironically, a passage in the document states that the holder should follow orders from "me" (that is, the president) "or the future President of the United States." This document has a large vignette of an American eagle at the top, and a very large vignette at the bottom showing American flags, cannon, a drum and bugle, various implements of war, a liberty cap and, strangely, a plumed helmet from a suit of armor. This beautiful document has a few folds and one tiny hole, not affecting any writing, a light water stain in one corner, and is otherwise in excellent condition. A historic, important document due to it's very significant date!

President Abraham Lincoln was shot at Ford's Theater in Washington, DC on April 14th and died the following day. In following Lincoln's lenient policy toward the defeated South, President Johnson incurred the wrath of Congress, which later impeached him, but failed to convict him by a single vote.
