Andrew Johnson's Franking Signature as Senator

ANDREW JOHNSON.
c. 1854-1862, Franking Signature "Free Andrew Johnson U.S.S" (United States Senator) on a 4" x 1.25" clip from a "FREE" Frank Envelope, Choice Very Fine. Johnson's boldly accomplished signature measures a huge 3.75" across. The clip has been mounted to a larger 5.5" x 2.5" sheet. Light foxing, small tear above the signature does little to detract from this excellent specimen.

Andrew Johnson represented Tennessee in the U.S. Senate from 1857 to 1862 before being appointed military governor of Tennessee by Lincoln. His loyalty to the Union during the Civil War would be rewarded with the Republican vice presidential nomination in 1864.
