1898 "William McKinley" Appoints "Evan Miles" to Brigadier General During The Spanish American War

WILLIAM McKINLEY, 25th President of the United States.
Partly-printed Document Signed "William McKinley" as President, on vellum, October 6, 1898, Washington, D.C., 18" x 21", Choice Very Fine. Appointing Evan Miles "Brigadier General of Volunteers." Countersigned by former Union Brevet Brigadier General Russell A. Alger as Secretary of War and docketed by Henry C. Corbin as Adjutant General. Blue War Department seal is intact at lower left. Minor edge soiling and slight ink brushing in signatures, with traces of prior mounting paper pieces on its blank reverse side. The United States declared war on Spain April 21, 1898; it ended with the Treaty of Paris, signed on December 10, 1898. The document is boldly signed in black ink. An excellent display item. Ex: EAHA Auction, October 5, 2002, Lot 100, where it sold for $862.
