WILLIAM McKINLEY, 25th President of the United States.
Partly-printed Document Signed, "William McKinley" as President, on vellum, July 16, 1898, Washington, D.C., 15" x 19", Extremely Fine. Appointing Charles R. Hickox, Jr. "Second Lieutenant of Infantry." Countersigned by former Union Brevet Brigadier General Russell A. Alger as Secretary of War and docketed by Henry C. Corbin as Adjutant General. Blue War Department seal is intact at lower left. Margins have been slightly trimmed, affecting nothing, slight even overall paper tone and laid down onto a backing mat for display. This appointment was signed boldly by McKinley during the Spanish American War, which officially began on April 25, 1898 and ended with the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898. An excellent and attractive display item. Ex: EAHA Auction, December 7, 2002, Lot 161, where it sold for $604.
