Admiral William Thomas Sampson (1840-1902) led the U.S. Naval forces in the siege on Santiago, Cuba in July 1898, during the Spanish-American War. Much like his colleague Admiral Dewey had done in the Philippine Islands, Sampson defeated the Spanish forces within hours. Charles Henry Parkhurst (1842-1933) was an American clergyman and social reformer, from Framingham, Mass. He preached two sermons in 1892 in which he attacked the political corruption of New York City government. Backed by the evidence he collected, his statements led to the exposure of Tammany Hall and to subsequent social and political reforms.
