Washington's Account Book & Sheet of Continental Notes
1838, Printed Book, "Monuments of Washington's Patriotism," with Engraved Portrait of Washington and Reprint of a Sheet of Continental Currency, Fine to Very Fine.
This book was published in 1838 as a fund raiser for Washington's Manual Labour School and Male Orphan Asylum. Printed by "P. Force, Printer," in 13.5" x 9" format, the main part of the work consists of a 52 page facsimile of the public accounts kept by George Washington during the Revolutionary War, showing his careful regard for public money. The original account book was kept by the Treasury Department, and was used to make this facsimile copy. To this has been added a 23 page biography of Washington, plus a printing of the Constitution. The frontispiece to this work consists of an 8" x 6" engraved portrait of Washington, lithographed by P. Haas, from a painting by Rembrandt Peale, with a facsimile of Washington's signature below. This engraving is in very nice condition, protected by a sheet of blue tissue, and lightly foxed. At the end of the book there is a reproduction of both sides of a sheet of 8 Continental Currency notes, in denominations of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 30 dollars, all with serial number 39967. The book offered here has a black calf hard cover, with gilt decoration on both front and back, but no title. The pages are complete and tightly bound, with light foxing. There is a 2" tear in the margin of one page, not affecting any text. The corners of the cover are heavily worn, being now rounded, and there is a .5" chip on the top of the back cover. Both covers are attached, but starting to loosen. We have also seen this book with a cloth hard cover, signed by the Chief Clerk in the Treasury Register's Office, and in a cloth cover with 3 extra plates. A rare and historic souvenir for the Washington Collector.
