Copy of The Most Famous Lincoln Signed Photograph
c. 1870, Cabinet Card Photograph of the famous "Speed Photograph," Very Fine.
This is a very unusual 4" x 6" mounted albumen, being a privately commissioned copy photo of the famous "Speed Portrait" that was inscribed and signed by Lincoln on October 3, 1861. This is the first example of this image we have encountered. There is no credit on the verso, but we believe that the image must have been made at the behest of the Speed family, which owned the piece until it was auctioned in 1993. The photograph bears just a little wear, but is otherwise in excellent condition.
The original, presented by Lincoln in 1861 to Lucy Speed, the mother of Lincoln's close friend, Joshua F. Speed (1814-1882) was inscribed "For Mrs. Lucy G. Speed, from whose pious hand I accepted the present of an Oxford Bible twenty years ago. Washington D.C. October 3, 1861 A. Lincoln" Not only does the original have a terrific association, but also it is the longest inscription on a photograph ever penned by Lincoln. The original signed photograph, a salt print taken by an unknown photographer between February and June 1861, remained in the Speed Family until it became part of the collection of the J.B. Speed Art Museum in Louisville. It was sold off by the museum in 1993 at auction for $178,500.
