Almanack Illustrated With Three Paul Revere Engravings
1772, "An Astronomical Diary; or Almanack for the Year of our Lord Christ 1772," by Nathaniel Ames, (Boston: Edes & Gill, 1771), Including Three Different Engraved Illustrations by Paul Revere, Fine.
This is a very rare, original printing of Nathaniel Ames, entitled, "An Astronomical Diary; or Almanack for the Year of our Lord Christ 1772". It has 3 different, engraved illustrations produced by Paul Revere, 24 pages, in 7" x 4.25" format, being disbound and restitched with some modest typical wear and toning. The three rare Paul Revere engraved cuts include the portraits of "The Dwarf Emma Leach", "The Patriotic American Farmer" (John Dickinson) and "Catharine M'Caulay." There are 3 known variants to this almanac, and the unsigned cuts are fully attributed to Paul Revere by Brigham, based on the engraving style and most directly per his written charges that were recorded in his day book (being Paul Revere's work and payment schedule). See Brigham, "Paul Revere's Engravings," page 135. showing each of these three illustrations and discussing Revere's recorded entries into his day book for the work. The front cover, with the Dwarf engraving shows some wear, and the illustration itself is quite clear and distinct. The inner two engravings are even better, having been more protected as inner pages and are sharp, clean and quite nice. Overall, this is a rare printing and considering that single Almanac or Magazine illustrations engraved by Paul Revere have been selling in the $3,000 to $6,000 range each, for the more common, non-historic prints, our estimate range should prove quite reasonable, if not conservative. Evans 11961.
