1860 Presidential Electors Wyoming Precinct Poll Book
1860 Presidential Electors Poll Book from Wyoming Precinct, Fine.
This 14-page, extensive poll book lists electors for the 1860 presidential campaign in the Wyoming Precinct, and measures 13" x 8". The major candidates listed are Breckinridge & Lane (Southern Democrats), Bell & Everett (Constitutional Union Party), and Douglas & Johnson (Northern Democrats) but no Lincoln & Hamlin. Lincoln-Hamlin were not on the ballot in nine Southern states, and since Wyoming was a precinct in Nebraska Territory at the time, it is possible that they were following Southern secessionist sentiments. Some wear to the outer wraps, but the manuscript on the internal pages is crisp and legible. An unusual, one-of-a-kind political item!
The election of 1860 was held on November 6. Because of the sectionalism between pro- and anti-slavery states, Lincoln was not even on the ballot in nine Southern states. He won only two counties (St. Louis County, and Gascony's County, Missouri) out of 996 counties in the entire South. In the six states still permitting slavery where he was on the ballot, he came in fourth in every state except Delaware (in which he came in third). Breckinridge, who was Vice-President at the time, and the only candidate to later support secession, won all the states of the future Confederacy except Virginia and Tennessee. He lost in the border states of Missouri and Kentucky (his home state), but won Delaware and Maryland (both of which also still permitted slavery). Lincoln won an electoral majority without a popular majority--winning just under 40%, but carrying 180 votes in the Electoral College, compared to Breckinridge's 72.
The United States acquired the land comprising Wyoming and Nebraska Territory from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, and Wyoming did not became a territory until 1869. It granted women the right to vote that year, and later joined the union as the 44th state in 1890.
