Political
Parodying Benjamin Butler's "Contraband of War" Policy !

1861, Farcical Music Sheet: "THE 'CONTRABAND' SCOTTISCHE," Published by Lee & Walker, Philadelphia, PA, Choice Very Fine.
Civil War music sheet with black and white litho illustration featuring four "contraband" young slaves running from a whip-carrying overseer, 12" x 9.75", 6 pages, including covers. The caption beneath the litho reads: "COMPOSED AND RESPECTFULLY DEDICATED TO MAJ. GENL. B.F. BUTLER" by Sep Winner--trimmed bottom and top edges, light foxing and toning, reinforced spine, and some minor penciled notations on inside music. In a policy established early in the war by Benjamin Butler, slaves who succeeded in making it across enemy lines were given safe harbor and putative freedom by federal troops. Many were employed as officers' servants. Rare slave-related ephemera--the first example we have encountered!
