Two Campaign Cards from the 1906 New York Gubernatorial Race

1906, Two political campaign cards using the same slogan to promote opposite candidates, Choice Fine.
A curious example of political ephemera, these two 5.5" x 4.75" cards, both designed by Alva E. Stern, play both sides of the political fence. Playing on the alliterative nature of the 1906 New York gubernatorial race that pitted jurist Charles Evans Hughes against publisher William Randolph Hearst, Stern came up with the slogan-question, "Heaven or Hell?" and cleverly produced two versions, one promoting Hearst, the other Hughes. Each bears a photo image of the candidates and the initials "H & H" just to drive the point home. Fortunately for Stern, the bagel company of the same name was not yet established! Both cards bear just a hint of toning, one bears some minor loss at top right, not affecting text or images. Housed in a 15" x 7" frame with red mat. Not examined out of frame.
