1943 Franklin D. Roosevelt "Magic Glass"
December 1943, desktop magnifying glass given as a gift by Franklin D. Roosevelt, Choice Extremely Fine.
Besides being an ambitious politician and public servant, Franklin D. Roosevelt was also an avid stamp collector, and this 4" x 4" magnifying glass was likely a present to one of his fellow collectors. A thick piece of glass with a spherical top, sitting 1.25" tall, is framed by an opaque, maroon surface with gilt lettering: "CHRISTMAS 1943 From F.D.R."
Roosevelt once declared "I owe my life to my hobbies, especially stamp collecting." His assemblage of U.S. Postage Stamps remains one of the most impressive such holdings ever assembled and was sold at auction in 1946.
