Railway Bond Signed by "W.E. Dodge" Founder of YMCA
1873, The Houston & Texas Central Railway Company, $1,000, Seven Percent First Mortgage Bond, Waco, TX, Choice Very Fine.
This large printed bond has a train vignette at the top and is Signed, "W.E. Dodge" as President of the company. This "gold bearing" uncancelled bond measures 18" x 18" has been folded and still has one row of original coupons remaining. Issued as serial No. 481, this is a great looking Texas Bond for display--signed by merchant, YMCA founder, and social reformer William E. Dodge. (According to the current Sanders Autograph Price Guide, a Document Signed by William Dodge lists for a value of $480.)
William E. Dodge (1805-1883) was a New York businessman, a noted abolitionist, and Native American rights activist who served as the president of the National Temperance Society from 1865 to 1883. Dodge served in Congress for a portion of 1866-67 and was a founding member of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). His son, Charles Cleveland Dodge, was one of the youngest brigadier generals in the Union Army during the Civil War.
