Complete 100 Stereocard Set of Images of Palestine
1909, Hardcover Book entitled, "Traveling in the Holy Land Through the Stereoscope," Complete With Its Mated Set of 100 Period Stereocards in Their Original Box, the Book is Extremely Fine & Stereocard Views are Mint.
This historic lot consists of a Complete Set of 100 Mint Condition Period Stereocard Views of what is today Israel and the surrounding areas, combined with the hardcover book describing those views. These stereocards are numbered 1 through 100. They are copyrighted 1901 by Underwood and Underwood of New York and London. They are contained in a custom box designed to look like 2 large books when placed upon a shelf. The spines of which bear the title, "Palestine." This book box is constructed with brown cloth over boards with gilt lettering and decoration on the spines. The guidebook with this set is the 1909 printing of the 1900 original, written by Jesse Lyman Hurlbut, a noted writer of Christian religious books. The book contains 220 pages plus 4 pages advertising other "Underwood Stereoscopic Tours," and is bound in brown cloth, matching the stereocard "books." All 5 of the fold-out maps are present and in excellent condition. These "real photo" images are mostly of sites mentioned in the Bible.
The book itself has moderate wear on the corners and edges of the covers, the contents being in excellent condition, aside from the title page, which has come loose at the bottom edge. The "book box" has only slight wear, with a .75" tear to the top right corner. These stereocards, however, are in pristine condition, slightly curled as usual. Though bearing a 1901 copyright date, we believe these photographs were originally taken in the late 1800's, as we have seen similar Underwood stereocards of Palestine dated 1896. A wonderful collection of photographs of Palestine as it was under the Ottoman Empire. We sold a later, 1914 edition of these cards, and without the book, for $778 in our sale of October 22, 2005, Lot 1005. Complete sets of these cards are quite rare today, specially complete with the book and in such lovely quality.
