Appears unsigned, oil on canvas, 40'' H x 71'' W, est:$5000/7000. Note: Gilbert Paoli managed the famous Coconut Grove lounge at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles during the 1950s and his family's painting was on display in the restaurant. When he opened Gilbert Paoli's La Rue restaurant on the Sunset Strip in the 1960s, the painting was reputed to have hung above Frank Sinatra's favorite table. Provenance: By descent in the family to Gilbert Paoli, France and Los Angeles, prior to 1940s; on display at Coconut Grove lounge at the Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles, 1950s; acquired by the present owner from the above.
Condition report
Visual: Craquelure and stretcher bar creases throughout. A 1" horizontal area of paint loss in the upper right quadrant. Five older waxed patches on the verso. Blacklight: Extensive touch-up throughout the painting particularly along the four edges, on most of the figure's feet and lower legs, throughout the torso including a 12" horizontal area across the figure's chest.
