Francisco Jose de Goya y Lucientes (Spanish, 1746 - 1828)
Sopiones. [Caprichos Plate 48].
Etching with aquatint. 1799. Titled in letters, lower center. Probably from the third edition. Cream colored wove paper. 8 1/8 x 6 in. (206 x 152 mm). Sheet Size: 10 3/4 x 7 1/2 in. (273 x 190 mm). This impression was loaned to the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, 1958. The eighty etchings of "Los Caprichos" were the first collection Goya produced for sale as a single set. In 1803, fearful of the Spanish Inquisition, Goya relinquished the plates to Charles IV, in return for a pension for his son. The plates remain with the Calcografia. [D85; H83].
