Originally taken by southern photographer A.J. Riddle in August 1864. The original negatives were presumably kept by Riddle and disappeared in the 19th Century, consequently photographers used earlier photographic prints to publish images. These images were published by several photographers in the 1880's, including Theodore Weisman, who published smaller formats ( 4 ź" X 6") than this offered image. This image, published by Rombacht & Groene, Cincinnati, Ohio, is c. 1880's as well. The photograph itself measures 6 ˝" X 8 3/8", and is 10" X 12" overall with the mount. These prison images still remain a disturbing remembrance of the devastation of the Civil War. Chips to bottom mount. Else fine. A scarce Civil War image.
