The ‘BB’ designation of the Ferrari 512 BB was short for ‘Berlinetta Boxer,’ referencing the car’s body style and engine layout. Long, sleek and low, Pininfarina penned the lines and Scaglietti executed the bodywork over a lightweight tube frame. The Boxer’s horizontally opposed 4.9-litre overhead camshaft engine with its four triple-throat Weber carburettors produced a healthy 360 brake horsepower. With a zero to 100 km/h time in the mid-five second range, and a top speed of nearly 280 km/h, the Boxer was a worthy successor to the 365 GT/4 BB and an admirable competitor to Lamborghini’s new Countach. Produced from 1976 to 1981, about 929 examples were produced before the 512 BB was replaced with the BBi, now sporting Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection.

The Ferrari 512 BB presented here, s/n 21033, was formerly the property of the industrialist Baron Édouard-Jean Empain of Paris and shows approximately 35,000 kilometres on its odometer. It is finished in Rosso Corsa and has a very attractive tan and black leather interior with red carpets.

In addition to a comprehensive refurbishment and engine rebuild conducted in 1996 at Charles Pozzi, S.A., 21033 benefited from a repaint in 1997 as well as additional servicing at the noted Parisian Ferrari and Maserati dealership. Acquired by its current owner in 2007, it had been freshly recomissioned with a change of cam belts and a new clutch, among other work. It reportedly remains in excellent condition and is accompanied by its tool kit.

With its stunning presence, very capable chassis and drive train, and positively intoxicating exhaust note, the 512 BB offers an exceptional ownership experience. While time and lack of maintenance have steadily reduced the number of excellent 512 Berlinetta Boxers available, the opportunity to acquire a wonderful, well-maintained example such as this has become both increasingly rare and correspondingly more desirable.

La sigla “BB” della Ferrari 512 BB è l’acronimo di “Berlinetta Boxer”, nome riferito allo stile della scocca della vettura e alla configurazione del motore. Lunga, elegante e bassa, la carrozzeria fu disegnata da Pininfarina e realizzata da Scaglietti su un telaio tubolare. Il motore Boxer, con albero a camme in testa orizzontalmente opposte da 4,9 litri e con i suoi quattro carburatori a triplo corpo Weber, sviluppava 360 CV di potenza. Con uno scatto da zero a 100 km/h in circa 5 secondi ed una velocità massima di quasi 280 km/h, la Boxer era la degna erede della 365 GT/4 BB ed un’eccezionale concorrente della nuova Countach della Lamborghini. Tra il 1976 e il 1981 ne furono prodotti circa 929 esemplari, prima che la 512 BB fosse sostituita dalla BBi, dotata d’iniezione Bosch K-Jetronic.

La Ferrari 512 BB qui presentata, telaio n° 21033, è appartenuta all’imprenditore Barone Édouard-Jean Empain di Parigi e il suo contachilometri segna circa 35.000 chilometri. È verniciata Rosso Corsa con splendidi interni in pelle marrone e nera e tappetini rossi.

Oltre alla risistemazione generale ed alla ricostruzione del motore effettuate nel 1996 dalla Charles Pozzi S.A., la 21033 fu ridipinta nel 1997 e ulteriormente revisionata presso il noto rivenditore Ferrari e Maserati di Parigi. Acquistata dall’attuale proprietario nel 2007, furono cambiate le cinghie e la frizione, e sottoposta ad altri interventi. È dichiarata in eccellenti condizioni ed corredata di kit di attrezzi.

Grazie al suo look sorprendente, al suo gran telaio, ed al suono positivamente inebriante del motore, la 512 BB offre a chi la possiede l’opportunità di vivere un’esperienza eccezionale. Poiché gli effetti del tempo e della scarsa manutenzione stanno costantemente riducendo il numero di 512 Berlinetta Boxer in buone condizioni disponibili sul mercato, le occasioni di acquistare un esemplare meraviglioso e ben conservato come questo sono sempre più rare.
