When the 365 GT4/BB made its debut at the Turin Motor Show in 1971, it stood the world on its ear. Its factory-rated 380bhp horizontally-opposed “boxer” 12-cylinder engine was mounted amidships, delivering blistering performance that surpassed not only its competition, the Lamborghini Miura, but also its predecessor, the legendary Ferrari Daytona. The 365 GT4 BB followed traditional Ferrari practice of tubular steel construction clothed in a sleek and sensuous Pininfarina body, but while it kept the Daytona’s bore, stroke, and compression ratio, its 4.4-litre engine was based on Ferrari’s successful 312B F1 racer.
Delivered new to the official Ferrari agent in Milan, chassis number 18201 has a very well documented history and was acquired in 1975 by Albert Arras, a professor in New York City, New York. The handsome Ferrari then passed through a succession of owners on the East Coast before finding its way to Sweden and England, ultimately being subjected to a thorough 18-month restoration by marque expert Bob Houghton. By the late 1980s, the car had been repainted red from its original Argento. After its acquisition by a Spanish businessman it was sold to Portugal, to be driven in 2004 on the Tour de España. More recently, the car was serviced by Lorenzini Autosports of Lisbon, where it was fitted with new Michelin XWX tyres on all corners; it was repainted in Rosso Corsa, and a full engine-out service, which included the fitting of new cam belts, was conducted. The interior boasts the correct early single-piece seats, which have developed a lovely patina, complementing the very nice original dash.
Despite the increased engine displacement, the 512 BB, successor to 365, was slightly less powerful and somewhat heavier than its predecessor, mostly due to the imposition of more stringent government regulations, making it a notably slower car. What’s more, only 387 365 GT4 BBs were ever built, rendering well-documented examples such as this highly collectable indeed.

Il suo motore a 12 cilindri “boxer” con 380 CV di potenza, era montato centralmente, assicurando alla vettura prestazioni sorprendenti che superarono quelle della sua concorrente, la Lamborghini Miura, e quelle del modello precedente, la leggendaria Ferrari Daytona. La 365 GT4 BB, come da tradizione Ferrari, fu dotata di un telaio in acciaio tubolare rivestito da un’elegante e voluttuosa carrozzeria Pininfarina, mantenendo alesaggio e corsa e rapporto di compressione della Daytona, il motore da 4,4 litri fu realizzato sulla base della celebre Ferrari da F1 312B.
Consegnata nuova all’agente ufficiale della Ferrari di Milano, questa vettura con telaio 18201 ha una storia molto ben documentata: fu acquistata nel 1975 da Albert Arras, un professore universitario di New York City. La bellissima Ferrari ha poi cambiato diversi proprietari in USA, prima di imboccare la strada verso la Svezia e poi l’Inghilterra ed essere infine sottoposta ad un accurato restauro di 18 mesi dall’esperto di Ferrari Bob Houghton. Alla fine degli anni ’80, la vettura era stata ridipinta rossa. Dopo essere stata acquistata da un uomo d’affari spagnolo, fu venduta in Portogallo per essere guidata nel 2004 nel Tour de España.
Più recentemente, la vettura è stata revisionata dalla Lorenzini Autosports di Lisbona, che ha montato nuovi pneumatici Michelin XWX su tutte e quattro le ruote, l’ha ridipinta e sottoposta a revisione totale con smontaggio del motore, inclusa la sostituzione delle cinghie. Gli interni vantano ancora i sedili originali monoblocco, ora ricoperti di una patina di grande effetto e perfettamente abbinati al suggestivo cruscotto originale.
Nonostante la maggiore cilindrata del motore, la 512 BB, erede della 365, è leggermente meno potente e più pesante del modello precedente, differenze per lo più dovute a disposizioni di legge che hanno reso questa vettura notevolmente più lenta. Inoltre, della 365 GT4 BB sono stati realizzati solo 387 esemplari, scelta che ha regalato a queste vetture dal passato così ben documentato un inestimabile valore collezionistico.
