Along with the Gebrüder Mannheimer, Rudolf Hertzog and David Leib Levin, Hermann Gerson was one of the founders of the Berlin clothing industry which later became one of the city's main industries. Starting in 1836 Gerson had a textile shop in the building of the Berliner Bauakademie. In 1841, he moved his shop to Werderscher Markt where he later opened the first department store in Berlin in 1848. It had a sales area of over 800 square meters with opulent interior decoration. This historic image shows the important building which was erected by Theodor August Stein and torn down in 1890. - Slightly faded, crease mark in lower left corner and one small retouched spot in upper right, otherwise in good condition.
