Sign In to see what this sold for

Detail of one of Diego Rivera's Frescoes at the Ministry of Education, Mexico City. Circa 1926. Vintage gelatin silver print. 19,5 x 24,7 cm. Photographer's stamp and annotated in English, Spanish and German in pencil/ballpoint pen on the verso, hinge-mounted along upper edge to mat.
Tina Modotti and Diego Rivera met soon after Modotti's arrival in Mexico in 1923. She modelled for Rivera and they both had similar Communist views and a concern for the Mexican people. She developed her own photography style and was commissioned by Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and other mural painters to document their work. This image shows a detail from the cycle of frescoes Diego Rivera painted for the Ministry of Education in Mexico City from 1923 to 1926. This detail depicts a Russian worker and Mexican peasant with the caption: "He who does not work cannot eat". - Minimal buckling in mid-right portion, one light crease mark in lower right area, otherwise a fine tonal print in good condition.
Provenance: The Estate of Dr. Erich Frommhold, Dresden.
Lit.: Luis-Martin Lozano/Juan Raphaelego Rivera. Sämtliche Wandgemälde. Cologne 2008.
