An early portrait by Van Rysselberghe of the legendary Jewish French actress holding an Oriental fan. Signed upper right. Theo Van Rysselberghe, Belgian, 1862-1926. This painting was sold at Sotheby's June 12 1980 lot 102, titled "Sarah Bernhardt with Oriental Fan" and bought in at a May 2007 Sotheby's sale. It was possibly exhibited at L'Academie de Gand, Cercle Artistique et Litteraire, February 1882. It is documented and illustrated in R. Feltkamp's 2003 Catalogue Raisonn?or Th?Van Rysselberghe, page 251, no. 1881-02.1. In a heavy carved gilt frame in good condition. Dimensions: 23 1/4" x 20 1/4" Condition: Good; relined.
