Not obviously signed, one bears a Launois label verso. Gelatin Silver Photographs, one depicting Malcolm X on a balcony overlooking what appears to be political gathering, the second showing Betty Shabazz in a room with their daughters,but without Malcolm. John / Jean Launois, 73, a noted photojournalist for the Saturday Evening Post, Life, National Geographic and other major magazines, French, (1928 - 2002) and a noted chroniciler of Malcolm X. These may be rare images. Born Jean Launois in France, he grew up during the Nazi occupation. He later served two years as a military photographer in the U.S. Army and became an American citizen in 1954. Represented by Black Star in New York and the Rapho Photo Agency in Paris, he became one of the top international photojournalists in the 1960s, covering wars, revolutions, the Beatles, environmental pollution, and the Soviet Union and Malcolm X's final pilgrimage to Cairo.
