MIDWESTERN GERMAN SCHRANK.
Probably central or northwestern Ohio, or possibly Indiana, ca.1840. Walnut with poplar secondary wood. Good size, with a bold cornice, raised panels, and resting on recessed feet; the interior with a single shelf and carved hooks. Retains an old/original finish with a grungy and occasionally alligatored surface. 82 3/4"h. 62 1/2"w. 25 1/2"d. Although this schrank, or wardrobe, does not fit into any of the standard types (such as Zoar, Sonnenberg, or Oldenburg), its bold cornice, liberal use of raised panels, and the recessed bracket feet suggest that it was made in one of the Germanic communities of Ohio or Indiana. While retaining an earlier aesthetic, it "knocks down" for easier moving, a trait more commonly associated with later 19th Century wardrobes.
