Description
OHIO DECORATED MINIATURE BLANKET CHEST.
Coschocton County, Ohio, ca.1830. Poplar. Chest over a single long drawer and resting on a boldly shaped skirt and bracket feet. Retains its original paint decoration consisting of brown "thumbprints" over ochre with "Etta" finger-painted on the lid. Retains its original wire brass pulls. Minor repair at the hinges. 10"h. 13"w. 7 1/4"d. Ex John Newcomer, Ex Milly McGehee. This distinctively painted miniature chest is part of a small group of such chests, two of which are illustrated in Hageman, Ohio Furniture Makers, v. 2, p. 69, another is in the collection of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center and is illustrated in Rumford and Weekley, Treasures of American Folk Art, and a fourth was sold at Garth's, July 29-30, 1988, lot 56. This group has long been attributed to Coshocton County. The Coshocton County attribution may be supported by a full-size blanket chest with a similar paint treatment that was found in Coshocton County and which sold at Garth's in May 2007 (lot 138). Of the six known miniature boxes in this group, the present example is the only one with a name finger-painted on the lid.
