FOLK ART CARVING BY FRED ALTEN.
Ca. 1900. Wooden Roe Buck with thick tan paint resembling hair painted over a grey base. Painted eyes. Some paint wear and minor edge loss. 9 1/2"h. Alten was born in Ohio in 1872, later moving to Detroit in 1912 where he died in 1945. He based his animal carvings on illustrations from Johnson's Household Book of Nature.This piece was featured on the NBC television program America: A Different Look: American Folk Art in 1976. Exhibited in Folk Art from the Collection of Gene and Linda Kangas at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, Ohio in March, 1979.

Condition
Condition: A major collection of Alten's carving was presented in an exhibition MICHIGAN FOLK ART ITS BEGINNINGS TO 1941 at the Michigan State University Kresge Art Gallery in 1976. The Columbus Museum of Art has a collection of Alten animal carvings.
