WATERCOLOR VIEW OF A DAYTON, OHIO FARM.
Signed lower right "Otto Gaertner fecit" and dated September 13, 1892. A well-executed image of a farmhouse and outbuildings with numerous figures and animals. 9 1/2"h. 17 1/2"w. (sight), modern frame, 20 1/2"h. 28 1/2"w. German-born Otto Edward Philip Gaertner (1845-1909) was the son of artist Edward Johann Phillip Gaertner. He studied in Germany and France before immigrating with two of his brothers to America, arriving in New York in 1872. He worked primarily with interior decorators, though he executed a number of landscapes. In 1892, he received a commission for a mural in a Dayton, Ohio,church and during his stay there he painted a number of rural scenes including the painting offered here. This painting passed from the artist to his daughter, Ethel G. Pyne, who authored a biography of her father (Otto Gaertner: Artist in Painting, a copy of which is included in this lot) in which this painting is illustrated on p. 57.
