Lifeboat Distress Canister from the “S.S. Morro Castle”

c. 1934, “S.S. Morro Castle” Lifeboat Distress Outfit Canister & Photo, Lot of 2, Choice Very Fine.
Lifeboat distress outfit canister with “S.S. Morro Castle Lifeboat Stores 2316” stamped into the cover. The empty canister appears to be made from copper and the cover appears to be brass. Plaque mounted to side of canister reads, “ GALBRAITH DISASTER OUTFIT FOR LIFEBOATS & RAFTS / APPROVED AND PASSED BY THE U.S. BOARD SUPERVISING INSPECTORS / C.C. GALBRAITH & SON, INC. / NEW YORK”. We are unsure what type of items were contained in this canister, but we imagine flares, whistle, signaling mirrors or other devices might fit neatly into a canister such as this one. The cover screws into the 10 inch tall by 5.75 inch wide canister. Minor dents and scratches to canister. Accompanied by a 7.5 inch tall by 18 inch wide photo, taken at Asbury Park, N.J. Sept. 9th 1934, where the hulk drifted ashore. An amazing pair of historical memorabilia from a mysterious disaster at sea!
